Just as corporations sell their expertise as consultants, Putin has turned his strategy for dismantling democracy into an exportable model—equipping power-hungry leaders with the tools to capture their own nations and become part of his authoritarian crime syndicate.

For years, Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s Prime Minister, and Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus’s authoritarian ruler, haven’t just been Putin’s star pupils—they’ve been his projects. They have methodically followed the Kremlin’s step-by-step playbook—Orbán to transform Hungary from a democracy into an autocracy, and Lukashenko to maintain his iron grip on Belarus.

Putin hasn’t just advised them from a distance—he’s played an active role in their rise and survival. In Hungary, Russian influence is deeply woven into Orbán’s political and media landscape. Russian disinformation networks have operated within the country, amplifying Kremlin-friendly narratives, while pro-government media outlets frequently echo Russian propaganda. Orbán’s government has also maintained close economic ties with Moscow, granting lucrative deals to Kremlin-linked oligarchs, which has helped reinforce Hungary’s alignment with Russian interests, particularly in weakening EU and NATO unity.

In Belarus, Putin has been even more hands-on. When mass protests erupted after Lukashenko’s fraudulent election, the Kremlin stepped in—providing security forces, financial lifelines, and intelligence support to crush dissent. Russian operatives infiltrated the opposition movement, disrupted protests, and ensured that Belarus remained a vassal state under Moscow’s control.

But this isn’t just about keeping his friends in power—it’s an investment for Putin. Each time he props up an authoritarian leader, he expands Russia’s influence and profits from the services he provides, whether through economic deals, energy dependence, or political favors. More importantly, he gains invaluable intelligence, testing, refining, and perfecting his blueprint for dismantling democracy, manipulating public perception, and neutralizing resistance.

This is why Orbán’s repeated private meetings with Trump raised so many alarms. Before the election, Hungary’s leader—who successfully turned his country from a democracy into an autocracy—held multiple private meetings with Trump, behind closed doors, with no public record of what was discussed. Given Trump’s history of closed-door meetings with Russian officials, his direct engagement with Putin’s closest EU ally raised serious concerns among democracy advocates.

And now, as Trump ramps up his efforts to weaken democratic institutions, the pattern is unmistakable. He’s not just embracing authoritarian tactics—he’s mirroring a playbook that has already dismantled democracies elsewhere.

Therefore, if we want to get ahead of Trump and possibly put an end to this hostile government takeover, we don’t need to guess his next moves—we just need to understand the blueprint Russia has been perfecting and exporting for decades.

Before we proceed with the list, it’s important to understand that modern authoritarians don’t just seize power through brute force. They dismantle democracy from within while maintaining the illusion of legitimacy. They stage elections they’ve already rigged, use courts to rubber-stamp their abuses, and flood the media with propaganda until truth itself becomes meaningless.

By the time the public realizes what’s happening, the system is already too hollowed out to fight back.

Here are the six core tactics Putin has perfected to transform democracies into dictatorships— and how Trump is following the same blueprint.

1. Control the Media

▪️ Putin’s Blueprint: Putin quickly understood that absolute media control is the key to maintaining absolute power. Today, Russian state TV is pure propaganda, with every talking point pre-approved by the Kremlin. Independent journalists are silenced, jailed, or assassinated.

▪️ Orbán: Took over Hungary’s media, turning mainstream outlets into government mouthpieces.

▪️ Trump: Spent years degrading the press, branding journalists as “the enemy of the people.” Wants to revoke FCC licenses of critical media outlets. Musk has already transformed X into a right-wing disinformation hub—and may soon help control TikTok if Trump purchases it through the new U.S. government’s “sovereign wealth fund.” This will certainly become a bigger issue once Trump amasses more control over the government.

2. Flood the Public With Propaganda & Cult Worship

He has also vowed to weaponize the DOJ against his enemies. While Trump doesn’t yet have complete control over the courts, that is undoubtedly his goal. If he succeeds, he won’t just be above the law—he’ll be able to use it as a cudgel against anyone who stands in his way.

4. Rig Elections & Suppress Opposition

▪️ Putin’s Blueprint: Putin doesn’t just rig elections—he controls them entirely. Fake challengers are installed to create the illusion of democracy, while results are carefully engineered to give him overwhelming victories, reinforcing the myth of his popularity and power. If any independent opponents gain traction, they are jailed, poisoned, or exiled.

Once Trump consolidates more control, he will almost certainly take steps to restructure the electoral system to benefit himself and his allies.

6. Rewrite the Constitution & Consolidate Power

▪️ Orbán: Rewrote Hungary’s constitution to give himself unchecked power.

This is why Putin has invested so heavily in Trump over the years. Russia and China have long dreamed of a world where the U.S. is too weak or too corrupt to stop them. Trump is their best chance to make that dream a reality.

If Trump Consolidates Power, the World Will Shift Overnight:

Trump has suggested he wants to meet privately with Putin and Xi, raising serious concerns about what they might be planning. Given his alignment with their interests, it’s entirely possible that Trump could become the third member of their “no-limits partnership.”

This may explain why the United States is suddenly pushing for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine—giving Putin time to rebuild his army while Trump works to consolidate power in America.

Trump isn’t just another authoritarian—he’s the missing piece that makes this global takeover possible. For the first time in U.S. history, the world’s top autocrats finally have someone in power who will play ball.
